The Wonderful World of Google Plus and Social Media

After a wonderful vacation, it’s back to reality and I’m finally getting caught up on blog posts.  Before I left, I had the most amazing experience on Google+.  I was somewhat of a late adopter when it comes to social media marketing and social networking.  My previous position in Corporate America didn’t necessitate learning how to use Facebook or Twitter for business (although it should have) and Google+ wasn’t even on my radar.

I jumped in feet first about six months ago and boy am I glad I did.  I’ve met people and made connections that I would have never dreamed of in a traditional networking model.  A connection I made on Twitter, led me to a Google+ Community called Open Social Media Initiative, #opensm.  Sherry Nouraini has a vision, and it’s to share information about social media in an open format and to provide open, accessible, and free education to help others succeed.

On Friday’s Sherry hosts a Hangout On Air for the #opensm community and anyone else who wants to join in; it’s a great way to stay on top of what’s happening in the word of social media and to meet great people from all over the world.  The topics vary from week to week, and often include an interview or presentation from a subject matter expert on topics such as Google Plus.  I had the awesome opportunity to be a guest presenter and we offered a three part workshop series on SEO: How Search Engines Find Your ContentHow to Create Content Search Engines can Find, and The Dance Between Search and Social.

A few Friday’s ago she switched it up, and instead of a presentation, Sherry held open office hours and invited people from the business community to share their social media challenges and get input and advice from the panel.  We had a very interesting discussion about how to apply social media in the aerospace metal and specialty steel distribution industry.

It boggles my mind to think that I was sitting in my living room sharing SEO tips with people in Illinois, California, and Washington.  We had coverage from both coasts and the Midwest.

Shortly after the Hangout, I checked my email for the Pennsylvania Search Engine Academy and was excited when I saw a new message.  It was “delivered with high importance” which always makes me smile because it means that it’s an inquiry about an upcoming search engine marketing workshop or onsite training.

The message wasn’t about a workshop but may be even better in the long run.

“We are watching you (now) on the opensm hangout. We would really like to interview you, on the topic of SEO, for Social Web Cafe Interviews (http://www.socialwebcafe.tv). Deborah has mentioned that she would like to discuss the crossover between SEO and social media and give you a platform to advertise yourself and services.”

Thirty minutes later a connection was made and my interview was scheduled. I’ve since had the pre-production interview and learned some new tricks to making my videos more effective.  Next up the actual interview.

I can’t wait to write the next installment.

Until next time.

Cheers!

I Sure Wish Google Would Get It Together with Business Local Search Tools!

guy so frustrated that he wants to smash the computer with a hammer<rant>

I’ve been a fan of the various Google incarnations for business listings for some time now. First it was Google Maps. That became Google Places. OK fine, same thing, slightly different tune. I had lots of great reviews on Google Maps/Places and was careful to keep my profile fully up to date.

I switched phone companies (long story), which meant I had to change my toll-free number. No big deal, just log in and change it, right?

Nope.

Had to re-verify the business. Of course, I couldn’t do it with a phone call either. I had to go the post card route. OK, whatever. Got that verified, but AAAGH, all my reviews disappeared! I had 18 or 19 five star reviews – all 100% legitimate glowing reviews, mind you (I don’t play games). These were all past students who had attended my class over time, and raved. Very grateful for that, but changing my phone number means they all go away?

*sigh*

Spin forward to this year. I changed my corporate address. No big deal. Just go into Google Places and change it, right? Urgh. Have to re-verify the damn business with another PIN. Of course, it has to be by post card. I had to ask for it FOUR TIMES before I finally got it in the mail today. Verified my business AGAIN and now I get a message that it’s “PENDING” – being reviewed. Huh? Hover over the bubble and it says, “Please allow several weeks.” Reviewed by whom and for what purpose?

google places screen shot showing pending

Waiting for Google To Make Up Its Mind

Meanwhile the business isn’t showing up.

Oh yes, that Google+ thing. I was an early G+ user when it was still a by-invitation-only system. But at the time, there was no business listing, only personal. Last year, Google started setting up Google+ business listings. Great!

I thought that Google was converting Google Places pages to Google+ business listings last year. Never happened. So I set up a business listing for myself. Guess what I have to do? Verify the blasted listing. Same address, same phone number, as my Google PLACES page (which by the way, in case you forgot, I will have to wait several weeks for it to be reviewed by someone).

I’ve asked for the verification post card for Google+ now THREE times (yes, by mail – can’t do it by phone). Still nothing in my mailbox.

Wow, Google. What’s up with all these machinations? It sure as hell isn’t this hard to set up a business listing in your competitor, FACEBOOK. Click, click, type, claim your URL, DONE.

Yeesh.

New Google Plus Look & Feel Review #SEO NEWS

Good day, my fellow SEO warriors! Some of us here at Search Engine Academy are getting into Google Plus in a big way! Two days ago, good old Google made some changes to the dashboard, look and feel to our G+ pages and profiles. Take a look below:

New Google Plus dashboard look & feel

Your default is multiple columns, and from what I’m reading, many folks are putting their streams back to a single column. I get that; this is a little overwhelming and is causing me vertigo.  In the upper left of this screen shot, you can see that your cue for new items in your stream(s) is quite different. It’s a little bit like Facebook. You have to click the little blue wheel to see new items in your stream.

If you don’t like it, click on this icon in the upper right hand corner and go back to a single stream:

Change your G+ stream layout

Did you also notice your profile picture is bigger? Whatever happened to Google saying they want more content above the fold? Sure aren’t following here!

You have some new features for your photos in Google Plus. You have what’s called “auto enhance” and “auto awesome.” Auto enhance lets you improve photo quality by tweaking contrast, brightness and other elements to make your photo better before uploading. The good folks at Google I/O came out with this explanation for you to consider:

Sometimes we’ll create a brand new image based on a set of photos in your library. For example: if you upload a sequence of photos, we’ll try and animate them automatically. Or if you send us a few family portraits, we’ll find everyone’s best smile, and stitch them together into a single shot. Likewise with panoramas, filmstrips, and a whole lot more. We call these kinds of enhancements Auto Awesome.

Google Plus is also adding hash tags that they feel are appropriate to items in your stream. If you click on the hash tag, you can see content related to what you post. I really like this, because I think it represents an opportunity to have your content show up more times. Thank you G+!

Hash tags can be automatically added in Google Plus

There are a few new changes to Google Hangouts that I think are going to improve user experience. If you get an invite or someone from your circles sends you a message about a hangout, you no longer have to accept the request first. Good for Google eliminating one click! Do you use Google Voice? If so, you can now take calls on your Google voice number while you’re in a Hangout, on Gmail, Google Plus and the Hangouts app in Google Chrome.

We’ll be incorporating these new features and benefits in our SEO training on day four of All Things Google.

What do you think of the new Google Plus? Let us know in the comments.

As always, I care about ya, my fellow SEO peep, so keep it between the ditches!

All the best to you,

Four Things To Know About Google Plus For Your Search Engine Optimization Efforts #SEO

Good day, my SEO heroes! I hope you are well. Search Engine Academy stays on top of what’s going on in the SEO world, and today we have something new to share with you.

Unless you’ve been living in the wilderness off the grid, you are probably aware that Google has rolled out it’s own social media platform called Google Plus or Google +.

Here’s four things you may not know about Google +:

If you’re optimized for local SEO by claiming and applying SEO to your local business listing, it’s now been rolled into Google Plus. If you haven’t claimed your business listing and you haven’t done jack to your Google Plus profile, now is a good time to apply some SEO to both.

You can create many pages or “communities” in Google Plus. You can make them public or private, whatever floats your boat. Of course, if you create a community page for your business, I bet you’re going to want it to be public, aren’t ya? Uh huh. I wrote up a post about Google Plus Communities back in December.

There are some cool tools to help you understand what’s going on in Google Plus:

Circle Count

This is a very useful tool that shows you stats about your profile and circles. You can also see what pages and profiles are ranking, which profiles are popular and more.

Circle Count is a website to see Google Plus stats and more

You can also view statistics for Google Plus profiles and communities based on:

  • Gender
  • Top 10
  • Countries
  • Follower Distribution

and more!

Plug in your own profile URL to see how you’re doing:

Enter your G+ URL to see your circles information

Your profile will come up. It will look something like this:

Your G+ information on Circle Count

Go ahead and click on yours to see this type of information:

Google Plus Profile Information

Specific G+ profile information in Circle Count

Once you get some traction in G+, you’ll get a circle ranking. You can also scroll the dates down on the right and see on any day how many people joined or left your circles as well.

Here’s another very interesting Google Plus tool:

Google + Statistics

On this site, you can easily see the Google + top 100, the top 5 G+ movers and shakers, who’s falling in popularity, and the hottest posts around Google Plus.

The Top G+ Statistics, Profiles and Communities

You can add your profile to see how it’s performing, but as of this writing, when I add mine, it goes to a blank screen. Huh. Go figure!

But you can see the top pages in terms of numbers of followers, so if you’re trying to find high-population communities to join and post to, this is a great way to quickly zero in on the biggies.

Individual profile as seen on Socialstastics.com

Click on any of the images to see specific information and statistics for that profile or community. From this page, you can click on the profile or community page, and you’ll be taken to it on Google Plus.

Now that you’re there, check out this feature from G+: Ripples…take a look at this, SEO peeps. On any G+ page, click on the down arrow in any post as shown below and choose “View Ripples:”

Pretty cool, huh? So, how did I figure all this out? I am not the brightest bunny in the forest although it ain’t for lack of trying, but I did download Guy Kawasaki’s free ebook on Google Plus and while reading it, I discovered these things and more.

So there you have it, my SEO peeps…four things about Google Plus you may not have known, but now that you do, share the love of this post and spread the word, umkay?

Has your SEO Practioner Ever Told a Little Fib While doing Your Web Analysis?

Have you ever heard your SEO practioner tell you a fib and if they ever did tell you one, could you be able to recognize it? It may start as early as the SEO describing your Web analysis. Or it can start with the use of redundant dialog perhaps to describe their services. Some extraneous explanations of some secretive process that only they know about.

Have you ever been advised, “I have a very good friend at Google that can pull some strings.” Better run the other way.

Or how about this one…”I can guarantee you top number 1 rankings!” What’s wrong with that, you ask? Google themselves tell you to run the other way from anyone making that claim.

Before I go on, in all fairness I do know lots of honest, top quality SEO practioners who would always tell their clients the truth. If you need the name of a top, quality SEO who will live up to their claims write me and I’ll make some suggestions of people who I know are top quality.

But for a minute let’s look at another subset of people who think they can bluff their way with some techno babel. What kind of dialog has your Webmaster given you in their Web analysis?

Descriptive words are the best way to attract and communicate effectively with any audience, regardless of what a person is writing about or trying to explain. But sounding redundant is one of the worst things possible for an author or a speaker, teacher or educator to do. After all, in the human dialog there are thousands of descriptive terms that are available that are fully capable of describing even the most technical or intricate subject matter regardless of Web analysis.

If you have ever hired a Search Engine Optimization or Internet Marketing practioner, have they perhaps told you little stories or fibs giving you some sort of explanation of what it is they do, that just seemed to make no common sense at all to you.

Has Your SEO Ever Told You Little Fibs and How Can You Know?

A professional search engine optimizer (one who has been trained in the skill of gaining top search engine visibility to your Web pages to the most correct searching audience) should be able to describe what it is they do and how they do it. But too many times, there are those who claim to be experienced in SEO, but have never had any professional training.

There are far too many people that seem to talk the talk, but honestly have only learned what they know through trial and error. Try something they hear from someone, if it fails go back and change it. Then try something else to see if it helps or hinders. One of the biggest problems with the trial and error method, is that it can be very expensive for the person who has put their trust in this person or company (because their talk was so impressive.)

Learning to recognize redundant techno babel when you hear it, can help you sort out someone who knows precisely what they are doing, from that someone who is just taking your cash and only talking the talk.

Let’s give you some actual examples and see if you have ever any of these typical stories that some Webmasters may tell you.

One of the oldest cons has got to be:

  • “I’m going to submit your Web site to hundreds of search engines to get you listed in the search results.”

Why this is false: There are only a few major search engines you need to focus on such as Google, Bing and Yahoo. Also just getting you listed is not enough. I actually met someone who was considering coming to training one time and he bragged about charging some client $60,000 to get him listed with the search engines. Now he was in trouble because
months later the company had gotten no results so he was thinking about coming to learn. Being listed in a search engine means nothing unles you pages are coming for the right key terms and then, for the right searching audience and then, for the maximum percentage of the time.

Here’s another one.

  • “Google changes is algorithm continually so you need to pay me each month so I can tweak the source code and reverse engineer the algorithm.”

Why this is false: It is impossible to reverse engineer a search engine’s algorithm. It don’t make sense to continually change the source code to try and keep up with Google’s algorithm changes. It is true that you need to continually work on a Web site each month because all the other competition will be working on theirs. But a precisely optimized Web page don’t need to be changed to stand the test of time. Remember, you are not trying to beat Google. They don’t care if you rank top spot for a phrase, but it’s your competing Web pages you are trying to stay ahead of.

How about this one.

  • “I like to measure each influential ranking signal one at a time, like the Keyword proximity in the Title Tag and the link reputation etc.

Why this is false: There are nearly 200 ranking signles and they cannot be measured “one-at-a-time” in isolation and expect any true accuracy. The reason is that all ranking signals have an effect and an influence on all the other ranking signals, so IF you are going to accurately measure them, they mused be measured a very specific way and all at the same time (if you want exact preciseness.)

Have you ever asked an SEO practioner for advice once you are finally in top spot and so you say, “What should I do now that I am in top spot.”

The SEO practioner gives you a rather strange response in a reverently (nearly whispering tone of voice) saying…”Don’t touch it. Whatever you do…don’t touch it.”

The only possible reason an SEO would respond this way is because they are fearful if you change anything the top spot will be lost. More over, what this reveals mostly is that that SEO probably does not understand why the page is in top spot, so they are fearful to change it.

Remember, these are only a few common examples. Perhaps I’ll write a Part 2 with more examples in the future.

Google Places is Replaced with a New Google+Local Tab #SEO

Google Places is Replaced with a New Google+  Local Tab

Google has just announced that Google Places will be phased out and replaced with a Zagat infused Google+ Local tab, the tab can be found underneath the Games button.

Google! & Google Places

When you click on the tab, you will receive recommendations based off of previous reviews of your circles and Zagat ratings. If you recall Google and Zagat had a merger about a year ago. Remember the days of the 1-5 star ratings? Well they are gone and have been replaced with the Zagat 30 point system. If you take a look at the Local Tab the layout is about as close as you can get to Yelp, you can enter in what you are looking for including the city.

Here is a brief overview of some of the changes.

  • The appearance of a “Local” tab within Google+
  • The integration of Zagat
  • The integration of Google+ Local pages across Google. Mobil, search and maps.
  • Static Places now give way to Google+ Local pages.
  • Google’s 5 star ratings are replaced by the Zagat 30-point rating scale.

Below is an example SERP for “Sushi near Palm Springs.” The top screenshot reflects the Old Google Places look and feel. And the second is the new Google+ look and feel.

Google+ for Business – Connect More

Google has always prided itself on providing the best possible experience for its users. This is done by presenting searchers with the most useful, timely and relevant results when they search. One way the Google team are working on improving this even further is by utilising Google+, the social networking platform initially created as an answer to Facebook

There are a number of advantages to using Google+. One advantage is that it is easier to send +1 people back to relevant parts of your website that are genuinely useful to them because you already have some relationship with them.

Google+ icons will stand out and link to your Google+ page. The Google+ badge is recognised by users and carries an intrinsic trustworthiness with it.

Google+Google+

This icon allows people who have visited your webpage to link directly from your page to their circle without leaving your page. Additionally, it is easy to share icons.

Another icon is for ‘Hangouts’. These are high quality video chats by individuals with up to 9 people in the conversation who can genuinely offer something of value to your audience.

Google HangoutsHangouts

A use could be a doctor talking about osteoporosis to a health food company group. They can get to know your audience almost one to one and share information. Another use for this application is utilising it for focus groups, all in real time to obtain genuine feedback on a product, advertisement or even current news.

SEO advantages of Google+ include maximising the power of +1. If you link your website to your Google+ page as well as your search result pages, all the +1’s are added together to give a combined total. This will give more opportunities for users to see recommendations for you and increase the amount of people you can reach.

The future: by knowing you better through personalisation and knowing your connections through Google+, over time, Google aim to give you and your users a better experience.

Google Direct ConnectDirect Connect

One way they will be doing this is utilising Google+ Direct Connect which is still in the experimental stage. Once fully developed, should you have your webpage and Google+ page linked, if a user searches for you in Google with the + sign in front of your name, they will be taken directly to your site rather than having to read through a list of search results presented to them, ultimately risking their click on an alternative site.

This Direct Connect will mean a whole new ball game for both Google Ads as well as SEO. Directing your potential visitors to always search for you with the + sign will critically eliminate the risk of your users even seeing your competition, removing risks of them seeing an alternate offer.

Visitors arriving at your site via Direct Connect will be encouraged to add your webpage to their circle. It is almost like having a sales rep on their shoulder advising them to remember you.

The ability to target niche markets by listening to the chatter is another benefit of Google+. Listening to your users allows you to identify niche groups which you can then segment and create ‘circles’ to whom you can offer exclusive content, specials or other information specifically designed to appeal to these niches.

Google CirclesCircles

For example a cinema may create a circle for young mums which offer discounts to daytime screenings of appropriate movies where they have excess capacity.

And Beyond: The most widely used search engine is currently Google. It has the technology to be able to perform ‘personalised search’ right now, when you add the connections, circles, hangouts and direct connect in the future, what do we see? An overarching technology support system that could be confronting, however used well, it can become your greatest ally. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) will change as a result, as will traditional advertising within the internet sphere.

Utilising Google+ to build relationships will probably become critical as without Google+ your organic search engine rankings may dry up. Therefore, the concept that Google will carry even greater authority and weight in the SEO spectrum is a given. Without Google+ there is a risk that no matter how well a website is built, a business may go completely unnoticed by the majority of searchers on the internet. Therefore, as long as you don’t want your business to hide its light under a bushel, it is a good idea to investigate the Google+ phenomenon and how it can help your business.
