What is Schema.org and Does It Help Your SEO Efforts? #SEO

Hello all you wonderful SEOers out there! Welcome to Search Engine Academy‘s blog on keyword research, information architecture, internet marketing and more.

While we teach a lot about organic SEO, we also pay close attention to those processes and techniques that support anyone’s organic SEO efforts to rank their web site higher.

One fairly new process – it’s been around for a little over a year now – is schema. org. What is schema.org, you say? Let’s answer that question and show you why it’s important for your SEO efforts.

Schema.org is data that is “on page markup.” Basically it’s structured data that’s HTML that you can use for a wide variety of things to publish better information about things related to your website and business. Schema.org helps search engines better understand your site. By using schema.org, you are improving or enhancing rich snippets for your web pages.

Google supports schema.org using microdata. Now that you know this, you understand it’ll help you in their SERPs, right? Right!

So what exactly is this data? It can be places, people, things and events, plus a whole lot more. The schema.org website has a humongous list for you to consider. Let’s consider just a few:

Event MedicalTest FoodEstablishment
Business Bloodtest Bakery
Comedy Imagingtest BarorPub
Dance Pathologytest Brewery
Education Medicaltestpanel CaféorCoffeeshop

Within these designations, there is code you put in your web page’s source code that shows up when you publish the page, so your web visitor can see it. This microdata can also show up in the SERPs.

For example, movie showtimes:

An Example of What Schema.org Microdata Might Look Like
The sky’s the limit! I encourage you to head on over to the website and browse the different ways you can use schema.org to show better information about your site to both web searchers and the engines themselves.

Google Webmaster Central has a nice article introducing you to schema.org. Actually, they are doing schema.org as a joint effort with Yahoo! and Bing, so the nice thing is, you don’t have make a choice between which format to use, because for once in their lives, the Big Three Search Engines decided to make it easy on us and accept the same format, yay!

The schema.org website is full of great information. It’s very plain and stripped-down looking, but it has everything you need to know to start using schema.org in your website. Are you ready to get started? Surf on over and begin reading how to do the code.

Here’s what I really enjoy about schema. org – it has a huge repository of  shared vocabularies that is understood by the Big Three Search Engines. This ties in very nicely with your information architecture (IA) efforts, which complements and supports your SEO efforts. See…everything works together in the end!

What does schema.org look like, anyways? What exactly is this microdata? Let’s say you run a site where you review games. You can boost your game in the SERPs by using schema.org Take a look at this example from the website:

Schema.org Example That Reviews A Game Created By Sony

See what it’s about now? Sure you do!

So, as you ponder ways to apply ongoing SEO to your site, think really hard about learning schema.org. It’s not tough. You get all coding from the site itself. By the way, be sure you use the Google rich snippets testing tool to make sure it’s all copasetic. Just remember, red is bad.

Until next time, please keep it between the ditches, umkay?

All the best to you,

How Google Authorship Helps You Achieve Your SEO Goals #SEO News

Howdy ho, my SEO friends! Have you heard of Google Authorship? No? Well, sit down and follow along with Search Engine Academy and learn how to harness this powerful SEO process that’s under-utilized and poorly understood. This is so cool and powerful, it’s now part of our SEO training!

Google Authorship is fairly new. It’s been around for about a year plus now, but it’s been slow to catch on. For my clients and attendees who have tried everything but still are not ranking as well as they could be, I tell them to make Google Authorship a priority. And if their competition isn’t doing it, this gives them an edge.

What is Google Authorship?

What is this Google Authorship thing anyways?

Well, it’s the process of creating a byline, linking this byline and your content to your Google Plus page, verifying the whole mess, then you start creating and publishing optimized content to rank well in search engine results pages (SERPs).

Why do this? For one thing, if you’re cranking out great content on a regular basis, why the hell don’t you establish yourself as an authority on your subject matter while you’re at it? This is what Google Authorship can do for you, SEO peeps. Your byline and photo shows up in SERPs. It’s pretty impressive!

If a searcher keeps coming back search results that have author-tagged content, Google will start putting more of the writer’s articles in the SERPs. What a great way to get your past articles and posts visibility, eh? Not only that, but if you’ve survived Google Panda, Google Penguin and zombies (kidding on this last one!), this will reward you even more.

Who Should Incorporate Google Authorship?

Anyone who blogs regularly, is an online news reporter, or creates new content pages ON A REGULAR BASIS should add this to their website. If you are allowed to create a byline and you write diligently, you are a prime candidate for Google Authorship.

OK, so how do you get started? First, if you haven’t already, create a Google Plus page. Log in with your Google account, or create one, if you haven’t already. Create your page and make it a nice one – optimize with a keyword phrase you want to rank for. Your tagline and introduction are the best places to do this.

Select a decent picture of yourself as your profile photo. For “Profile discovery,” be sure you make your profile visible in search – in other words, public.

In “Other profiles,” link to all of the places you create content to, as well as in the “Contributor to” section. You also have a “Links” section, so be sure to add some high quality stuff there as well.

Once you create your profile, you’ll need to take note of the unique profile number assigned to you. At the top, click on “View As” and select Public. Now, look at the URL up in the browser bar. You’ll see a hideously long number. Copy this URL and keep it handy, because this is what you use to establish your Google Authorship, umkay?

Now, Google being Google, you need to have a verified digital identity. Don’t panic – this is going to be your Google Plus profile page.

There are three ways you can get Google’s verified trust:

  • 3-Link Method
  • 2-Link Method
  • Email Verification Method

I now direct your attention to a awesomely intelligent Google Authorship expert named Rick DeJarnette. And I am going to ask you to go to his guide on Google Authorship because there is no sense in me trying to repeat what he says. I mean, it’s done well. I used it.

In that same article, Rick also shows you some additional WordPress configuration bits you may need to do. But not to worry, he’s spelled it out for you plain and simple.

Now that you know a little bit about Google Authorship, and you understand the benefits, why not get started and establish yours? If you’re writing new content all the time, why not get an extra boost in the SERPs for it?

Until next time, keep it between the ditches, my friends!

Google Penalty For “Low-Quality” EMDs #SEO News

Late Friday September 28, Google’s Matt Cutts tweeted that “low quality” Exact Match Domains (EMD) are being dropped from search engine results pages (SERPs). What you may not know is that the Google Penguin update included EMDs. The theory goes that if you buy a domain name with that keyword phrase, it’ll help you stay high in search ranking and indexing for that term. Search Engine Academy teaches SEO, and we stay on top of the latest and greatest from Google, so let’s examine this update and what it means.

You may also have seen Partial Match Domains (PMD). They may contain part of a keyword phrase you want to rank well for.

First, EMDs are domain names that contain an exact keyword you want to rank well for. It could be a phrase or a very well known brand name. It’s all fine and good that you want a keyword phrase for your domain name, but remember, SEO is much, much more than just the domain name. Don’t buy a PMD/EMD and call it your SEO strategy, because that’s just so weak, umkay?

Anyways, back to Google and Matt Cutts. Here are his tweets on the matter:

Matt Cutts announces an algorithm change for EMDs

Google's Matt Cutts tweets about algorithm changes regarding EMDs

For those of you who keep up with Google’s changes, this should come as absolutely no surprise, since Google’s been saying this for a couple years now. But it appears that they are finally tweaking the search formula to hit quality, trashy sites.

The bottom line is, if you have busted your butt building a high quality, useful site with lots of great content, you have nothing to worry about. As always, this is aimed towards spammers looking to score easy rankings fast before being caught. On the other hand, if you managed to snag a great keyword phrase EMD, and you haven’t put a lot of effort into making the site great, look at your analytics and see if you’ve been hit.

Having an EMD or PMD appears to be a six of one, half a dozen of another type of situation.  This analysis of EMDs and PMDs doesn’t settle the debate, but it will give you something to think about if you are creating a new site and are staying awake at night, wondering what domain name to buy.

My take on EMDs and PMDs is this: if you have a site that targets enduring keyword phrases – products, services or situations that are always being searched for on the internet – and if you have built a great site around that subject area, your EMD/PMD probably isn’t going to take a hit, or even much of one. It’s hard to predict if a domain name is going to help or not. There’s the old debate of dashes vs. non-dashes, etc. And if you can get the EMD/PMD for a TLD of dot com, that’s probably going to rank better than dot net, etc., but it’s probably already taken.

Consider this viewpoint on EMDs that presents the good and the bad for your search engine optimization efforts, but in the end, you make the call!

And if you are puzzled about the best practices of SEO, let us teach you what’s “white hat.”  We have SEO training locations around the world, and there’s probably one pretty close to you. In the meantime, keep it between the ditches!

Google Insight For Search & Google Trends Are Now One Tool #SEO News

Notice anything different in the last few days about Google Insight for Search? Yep, it’s changed – it was merged with Google Trends. Here at Search Engine Academy, we like to use Google Insight For Search when teaching keyword research, so this is going to be fun!

It’s now simply called Google Trends.

Google recently merged Insight and Trends into one tool

The New Google Trend Tool

Normally I’m a little apprehensive when Google changes one its’ tools, unless we’re talking Google Analytics, which keeps getting better and better, but I really like what I see here.

It’s nice that you can now see both insight and trend features on the same tool. So now you can see if you should lean more towards one phrase vs. another, and see what’s trending all on one screen. That’s a good way to see more data fast.

Not only that, but you can now use the tool on mobile devices and in versions for countries other than the U.S.

You can still add phrases and compare them for performance and popularity. You also can still select geographical locations to help you in your local SEO efforts. The screen looks a little different.

I started with “web development” and “web design” in the United States and specifically Maryland:

Using the new Google Trends tool

Comparison of keyword terms in the new Google Trends

It looks like I definitely want to use “web design” if I’m doing local SEO for Maryland. I also like that you can click a tab instead of having to choose a drop down menu for regional interest and related terms:

Using tabs in the new Google Trends tool

Easy tabs to go back and forth for data

So give it a whirl and post in the comments what you think of it.

Google Page Ranking – Are You Going To Sell or Buy Back Links To Improve? #SEO

So here at Search Engine Academy, we teach you how to create and implement your link building strategy that not only helps your Google page ranking, but also nets you high quality links.

Alas, a problem that’s as old as the internet – those who sell and/or buy back links to improve your site and page ranking – is once again being talked about.

In a word…DON’T.

Google page ranking can be changed if you sell or buy back links

Don't sell or buy back links to help your Google page ranking

If you’re serious about improving your Google page ranking – and by the way, Google pretty much assigns it as they change ranking signals without telling us – don’t sell or buy back links. You see the spam email come ons constantly – the ones that promise you PR 10 links for about $100.

Really? Come on, don’t fall for that crap.

Yesterday, on Matt Cutt’s blog, he went over page rank and links for about the umpty-umpth time and told us a story (names left out to protect the guilty) about a newspaper site that went from PR 7 to 3 and they were absolutely gob smacked as to why it happened.

In a nutshell, selling or buying links to pass rank is a no-no with Google. Like it or not, that’s the way it is. These are sponsored links that are strictly for sending some of the Google love to another page. That’s artificial linking, people!

Remember, page rank is all about Google’s trust in your site. If you take away nothing else today, take this: Google operates on the principle of “guilt by association.” By golly, if you’re in a bad neighborhood (spam sites, black listed sites), you are as bad as they are, even if you are innocently hanging around.

But if you’re deliberately taking up residence by pushing link schemes to line your pocket, just wait. Google’s gonna getcha.

OK, enough about the dark side here. What can you do to be a better link builder? There are lots to say about building links, particularly post-Penguin, but you can do it nicely and Google-legally.

You want to find authority sites and sites that complement your business offerings. Just in time for your new link building pursuits, see a really genuine, great way to find authority websites and get those links.

And if you’re really serious about doing holistic, white hat SEO, Search Engine Academy has locations around the U.S, Canada and the rest of the world (well, some places!) where you get personalized SEO training to boost your pages higher in search results.

Until next time…keep it between the ditches, OK?

All the very best to you,

Google Penguin Update Imminent? #SEO

At Search Engine Academy, one of the many things we do is stay on top of Google algorithm and ranking signal changes. Well, now it looks like Google should be coming out very soon with another Penguin update. Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s spam fighting team talked about updates that will be rolled out while attending the San Francisco SES conference the week of August 13, 2012.

Penguin was rolled out on April 24, 2012 on the official Google blog. It targeted black hat search engine optimization techniques and practices.

What is Google Penguin?

A Google Penguin algorithm update is coming soon.

Google Penguin is one algorithmic change that targets black hat SEOers and web spammers. Google makes this distinction from email spammers, which is what most web surfers are familiar with.

According to Google, Penguin targets spam techniques such as keyword stuffing and shady linking schemes. The keyword stuffing is employed in content and is used to fool the search engines into giving a page a higher ranking and indexing spot than it deserves.

Link schemes include linking to blog networks, using the same keyword phrase for multiple text links (think hundreds and thousands) on poor quality web sites and pages that are only created for trying to get Google to give link juice or credit for keyword-rich anchor text link.

There are many, many things you as an SEO consultant/specialist was advised to do to clean up links and get back into Google’s good graces. One thing that has come out of Penguin is that when planning your link strategy, use branded terms in a higher ratio than keyword phrase anchor texts for links. Part of the problem that triggered Penguin was the over-use of a single keyword phrase in hundreds of text links to rank high for that term.

Google released a Penguin update (1.1) exactly one month after the initial roll out on May 26. 2012. It was reported as an “algorithm refresh.”

We aren’t sure if this is going to be a big change, but according to Matt Cutts, it will make a “noticeable impact” on the sites that will be affected, and it will not be a data refresh.

Stay tuned – we’ll write up the newest Google Penguin change as soon as it hits the streets.

In the meantime, keep it between the ditches, and review your site to see how well you’re complying with webmaster guidelines!

Google Places is Replaced with a New Google+Local Tab #SEO

Google Places is Replaced with a New Google+  Local Tab

Google has just announced that Google Places will be phased out and replaced with a Zagat infused Google+ Local tab, the tab can be found underneath the Games button.

Google! & Google Places

When you click on the tab, you will receive recommendations based off of previous reviews of your circles and Zagat ratings. If you recall Google and Zagat had a merger about a year ago. Remember the days of the 1-5 star ratings? Well they are gone and have been replaced with the Zagat 30 point system. If you take a look at the Local Tab the layout is about as close as you can get to Yelp, you can enter in what you are looking for including the city.

Here is a brief overview of some of the changes.

  • The appearance of a “Local” tab within Google+
  • The integration of Zagat
  • The integration of Google+ Local pages across Google. Mobil, search and maps.
  • Static Places now give way to Google+ Local pages.
  • Google’s 5 star ratings are replaced by the Zagat 30-point rating scale.

Below is an example SERP for “Sushi near Palm Springs.” The top screenshot reflects the Old Google Places look and feel. And the second is the new Google+ look and feel.

Is the Google Penguin Algorithm Update Focused on Small Businesses? #SEO

It seems there is some talk that the Google Penguin Algorithm update is focused on small businesses, so here is my take on it.

Google Penguin is an Over Optimization Filter designed to lower the rankings of pages using excessive SEO techniques to “artificially” improve their rank, rather than by proving good high quality content – here is the official Google Webmaster discussion on their blog for you to read.

Some examples of SEO Over Optimization:

  • Have too many keywords on the page;
  • Exchange too many links;
  • Doing things in excess when compared to others;
  • Writing content for the keywords you want to be found for, rather than what reader’s are searching for.

As a result of the Penguin update “over-optimized or over-SEO-ed” pages are dropping in the search results, those pages with good content have no choice but to bubble up to the top of the rankings. And who would tend to NOT be optimizing their pages (maybe even non-optimized pages altogether) but small businesses?

If these pages have better information that can benefit the “Googlers” why shouldn’t they rise to the top? Delivering quality search results is always a trade off between Content and Authority for Search Engines, which is why quality pages with Less Google Page Rank or Google Juice have been able to out rank pages with Higher Google Page Rank on the Search Engine Result Pages.

Please reach out regarding this, or with any SEO / Internet Marketing questions you may have.

Search Engine Academy News – Will New Domain Naming system to Shake Up Traditional Branding

This report is not so much about brainstorming or about SEO.

Applications for hundreds of “new generic top level domains” (such as the traditional .org .com and .net) are considered to be the most “sub-stantive changes” to the Web site naming system in all of Internet History, according to the Toronto Star Newspaper today.

According to this news report today, “at $185,000.00 per pop, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the California based regulator that policies the Web< said it received more than 1900 applications by the May 30th deadline.”

According to reports, some firms like Google said it applied for.google, docs.,lol, and .youtube.
American bankers Association had applied for a request for .bank, and for .insurance.

“The entire objective of any company going into a TLD is to create a money tree.
To create a billion-dollar domain baby” stated the report from naming specialist
Naseem Javed, the head of the Brampton-based ABC Namebank.

Where things may go from here, is anyone’s guess.

Can you see large firms trying to capture their brand in a new extension?
Suppose you were to acquire the extension .SEARS or . Babies or even a name extension like .Reviews?

Perhaps in the near future, it won’t be so much about the early part of the Domain,
but it’ll be more about what comes after the dot.

Let’s watch and see.
